INTERIOR COLUMBIA BASIN ECOSYSTEM
|
April 30, 1997
In late 1996 the Science Integration Team of the Interior Columbia Basin Ecosystem Management Project released several science documents related to the Project. These included "A Framework for Ecosystem Management," "Status of the Interior Columbia Basin: Summary of Scientific Findings," and the "Integrated Scientific Assessment for Ecosystem Management in the Interior Columbia Basin."
On March 3-5, 1997 the Project held the "Ecosystem Management in the Interior Columbia Basin: Science and Management in Partnership Workshop" in Spokane, Washington. More than 600 people attended this workshop to obtain information on the Project's science findings.
Many outstanding presentations were made during the general sessions of the workshop. Attached are several speeches or presentations that contain key thoughts on ecosystem management and the linkages between science and management. Included here are:
Keynote Speech, Undersecretary of Agriculture, James Lyons
Keynote Speech: Science and Collaborative Stewardship of the Federal Lands: Partnership Renewed, Forest Service, Associate Chief, David Unger
Panel Discussion: A Scientifically Sound Management Strategy, Remarks by Forest Service, Pacific Northwest Research Station Director, Tom Mills
Panel Discussion: A Line Manager's Perspective on the Scientific Assessment,
Forest Service, Regional Forester, Hal Salwasser
Forest Service, Deschutes Forest Supervisor, Sally Collins
Bureau of Land Management, Bruneau Resource Area Manager, Signe Sather-Blair
Where do we go from here? A Journey Along the Road to Ecosystem-Based Management,
Bureau of Land Management, Fish/Wildlife/Forests Group Leader, Christine Jauhola
Closing Remarks, Science Integration Team Leader, Tom Quigley
Although this package is lengthy, I have received several requests for copies of these presentations. The thoughts and ideas are worth sharing with a wider audience. Please feel free to share with our many partners throughout the Basin.
